Community Engagement

The DeTAL Center will allow us to recruit and incorporate communities from diverse backgrounds for opportunities to participate in police science research related to de-escalation. We will engage community organizations and organizations from Western Illinois University, specifically the WIU Justice, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity organization and the Honors College, to provide feedback, input, lived experiences, and novel ideas as they relate to de-escalation training.

What Community Engagement Looks Like

  • Focus groups for scenario-based simulation content development and testing.

  • Training policy critiques and development.

  • Open forum discussions on de-escalation content.

  • Feasibility of combined officer, community member training sessions.

  • Solicit community feedback on best ways to communicate with community members about de-escalation.

  • Obtain law enforcement agency feedback on best strategies for communicating with community members about de-escalation.
